image(Jennings County, Ind.) – A suspect attempting to flee from police by swimming across a pond went underwater and drowned Sunday.

Officers from the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to U.S. 50 west of North Vernon on a report that the Seymour Police Department was in pursuit of a red Jeep Cherokee. The vehicle had fled from police in Seymour as an officer attempted to make a traffic stop.

The suspect vehicle traveled east on U.S. 50 and turned north on County Road 750 West near Hayden in Jennings County. Soon afterwards, the Jeep crashed into an embankment at the intersection of County Road 750 West at County Road 100 North.

After the crash the driver fled on foot and attempted to elude police by trying to swim across a pond. As he swam, officers saw him go under in the cold water and not return to the surface.

A member of the Indiana State Police Dive Team who lived nearby the pond also responded to the call. The diver was able to locate the individual in approximately 10 feet of water.

The suspect was pulled from the pond and officers immediately began CPR on him. He was transferred to an ambulance and taken to the Schneck Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The name of the person is not being released at this time.
