(Undated) - An Indiana priest who had been missing in Greece is reportedly safe outside the country where he said he was in danger.

Fox 59 in Indianapolis reports that Father Christiaan Kappes contacted his family Monday morning. He had not been heard from since September 29 when he made a frantic phone call to his father from Athens.

The television station reported that Kappes told his family that his friend and translator became involved in escalating violence. Kappes said he was in fear of his life.

Kappes’ family contacted the U.S. Embassy in Greece, the U.S. State Department, Senator Richard Lugar, the FBI, and Greek authorities.

Kappes was an associate priest at St. Louis Church in Batesville from 2002 until 2005. He has been studying in Greece on behalf of the Vatican for three years.
