(Frankfort, Ky.) - Kentucky soldiers may soon be able to vote by email if a proposal by the Kentucky Secretary of State succeeds.
Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes pitched the idea on Wednesday. She said email would be faster and more secure than sending absentee ballots back from overseas via the U.S. Postal Service.
The plan got the quick bi-partisan endorsement of legislative leadership, namely Senate President David Williams and House Speaker Greg Stumbo.
Williams said the proposal will become Senate Bill 1 in the 2013 legislative session.
Grimes said 15 states have or soon will offer online voter registration for soldiers deployed overseas. Twenty-four states allow voting by email or the Internet.
