The Beacon

(Dover, Ind.) - North Dearborn Road is now closed and will remain that way for a year.

The Dearborn County Highway Department shut down the road Monday between State Road 1 and Hiltz Road.

A $3 million construction project will straighten and flatten out a dangerous section of North Dearborn Road. Among the improvements to be made include better sight distance, replacing the bridge at Slab Camp Creek with a new concrete culvert, and wider 12-foot lanes with shoulders.

Eighty percent of the project will be paid for with federal funds.

Dearborn County Highway Engineer Todd Listerman has said the project will likely finish in the summer of 2013. The road could be reopened during the winter, weather and progress permitting.

Among the improvements to be made include better sight distance, replacing the bridge at Slab Camp Creek with a new concrete culvert, and wider 12-foot lanes with shoulders.

Most motorists will be asked to detour to McCann Road to Gaynor Ridge Road to Old State Road 1 to State Road 1. Local residents will still be given access.
