US 50

U.S. 50 in Ripley County was covered in dead animal body parts last Friday, June 15.

Ripley County Emergency Management

(Ripley County, Ind.) - A foul odor is still stinking up a stretch of highway in Ripley County.

Last Friday night, June 15, a truck carrying processed dead animal parts lost its load over about two miles of U.S. 50 near Friendship Road.

The Indiana Department of Transportation had workers and HAZMAT crews clear some of the disgusting and smelly mess off the highway through Wednesday, the Versailles Republican newspaper reports.

"I've never seen anything more disgusting," an INDOT worker told the newspaper.

Despite those efforts, homeowners along the highway say the smell is still unbearable a week later because most of the remains were scraped off the road and into their yards. Temperatures in the 90s this week have not been helping the situation.

One resident claims their cat died just a few days after getting into the animal remains.

The newspaper reported that INDOT crews had completed clearing the mess on Wednesday.
