(Verona, Ky.) - A mining accident 900-feet underground in Gallatin County claimed a woman’s life on Tuesday.

Emergency crews were called to the Sterling Materials mine on the 100 block of Sierra Drive in Verona at about 2:45 p.m.

Mine worker Angela Common, 37, was driving a truck in the underground mine when she lost control of the vehicle and was ejected. The truck then rolled on top of her. She died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

The truck involved in the accident was new to the mine. Common had received training on the vehicle on Monday and was using it on-the-job for the first time Tuesday.

Operations have been suspended in the shaft in which the accident occurred as the investigation continues.

Government safety records show the most recent incident with injuries at the mine was in 2010. The last fatality there occurred in 1999.
