(Louisville, Ky.) - Drivers are asked to leave early and find alternate routes for the foreseeable future if they use Interstate 65 in the Louisville area.
The Sherman-Minton Bridge is closed indefinitely after structural cracks were found.
Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels announced his decision to allow no traffic on the bridge Friday after consulting with Indiana and Kentucky transportation officials and the Federal Highway Administration.
According to the governor’s office, inspectors were examining the bridge Thursday when a crack was discovered in the critical load-carrying element of the bridge.
Further examinations of the structure are ongoing.
Traffic is being detoured over I-265 and I-65. The major change for Louisville drivers is the closing of I-64 ramps to I-65, to reduce congestion at Spaghetti Junction.
Officials worked through the weekend to inform the public, but long delays are expected on Louisville’s two other bridges.
