(Logan Township, Ind.) – With a shooting suspect still possibly in Dearborn County, a local school is taking extra precautions today.
North Dearborn Elementary School went on a “code yellow” lockdown Tuesday said Principal Jeff Bond. The decision was made after an armed man fled the scene of a home burglary on the 2300 block of North Dearborn Road, not far from the school, Tuesday morning.
That same suspect shot another homeowner on Ruth Avenue in Logan Township at about 4:00 p.m., after school had dismissed for the day.
Bond said North Dearborn Elementary will be on a lockdown again Wednesday at the recommendation of the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department.
“Everything went well yesterday,” said Bond. “We hope it will go as smoothly today.”
The “code yellow” means student movement in the building will be restricted to teacher escorts. Classrooms will remain locked the entire day and students will have indoor recess.
The Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools resource officer will be on hand at the school during morning and afternoon bus transfers.
Bond said the lockdown could continue farther into the week depending on the advice of the sheriff’s department.
