(Richwood, Ky.) - A tragedy in northeast Ohio has hit home in Boone County, Kentucky.
Copely Township Police near Akron say two Richwood residents were among the eight victims in a neighborhood shooting rampage Sunday. They were 51-year-old Craig Dieter and his 11-year-old son, Scott Dieter.
Scott was to be a sixth grader at Gray Middle School in Union when class resumed later this month. His father was his Boy Scout Troop leader.
The Dieter’s were visiting Craig’s sister, Rebecca, who was the live-in girlfriend of 51-year-old Michael Hance.
Although a motive for the rampage is under investigation, police say Hance opened fire on Rebecca in their home. He then went to two neighboring homes where Craig and Scott were killed. In all, seven people lost their lives.
Hance died in a shootout with police.
Rebecca Dieters was shot multiple times, but has been recovering in the hospital. She was the only victim shot to survive.
Craig Dieter's wife, Beth, witnessed the shootings, but was not among the victims. She is a special needs teacher with Boone County Schools.
