(Hanover, Ind.) – A Madison man may have drowned when swimming with friends at a rock quarry in Jefferson County Thursday.
Ryan Patrick Moreland, 23, and four friends had been swimming without authorization at a privately owned quarry west of Hanover along State Road 62, according to investigating Indiana Conservation Officer Steve Miller.
Witnesses told conservation officers the group was swimming across the quarry when Moreland began having difficulty staying afloat. Friends assisted Moreland to shore where he was unresponsive.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and King’s Daughters’ EMS were called to the scene at 6:23 p.m. CPR and other life-saving measures were unsuccessful.
Moreland was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner.
The cause of death is not known. An autopsy has been scheduled to take place on Friday. The incident remains under investigation.
