(Connersville, Ind.) – A Connersville boy is dead after he was pulled out of the Whitewater River Sunday evening.
Six-year-old Michael Gentry was swimming with his mother and sister near the 5th Street bridge when he went under in a portion of the river about 10 feet deep.
He was found within 30 minutes, but died after being rushed to Fayette Regional Hospital according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
It’s the fifth drowning in southeast Indiana this summer. The most recent case occurred June 25 on Brookville Lake when a Covington, Ky. man jumped off a boat without a lifejacket and did not resurface.
In another instance, a two-year-old boy drowned when kayaking with his parents on the Whitewater River near Cedar Grove June 1. He was wearing a lifejacket that conservation officer believe was not properly secured.
