Lawrenceburg's Pat O'Neill Memorial City Pool
(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - With Shigellosis spreading at a faster rate that most years in the tri-state, the Lawrenceburg's Pat O'Neill Memorial City Pool is taking some preventative measures.
Shigella is a bacteria that infects bowels, usually in young children ages two to four. It causes Shigellosis which has symptoms including fever, diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and nausea.
The city pool’s managers have received permission from the Lawrenceburg Parks and Playgrounds Board to restrict young children wearing swimming diapers to the baby pool only.
Managers say the baby pool is easier to clean in the event Shigella is found in it.
The new rule is only temporary.
Some pools in northern Kentucky have had to close for a few days this summer because 109 cases of Shigellosis have been diagnosed and reported to the Northern Kentucky Health Department since April. Usually there are only 25 cases all year.
