(Madison, Ind.) – Spectators shared a collective gasp as a powerboat crashed into a rescue boat carrying three volunteers during a race at the Madison Regatta on Sunday.
The U21 Miss Lakeridge Paving boat had missed a turn during a heat. On the way back to the course, driver Brian Perkins struck a small rescue craft carrying three volunteers around 5:00 p.m.
Indiana Conservation Officers, who were stationed near the race course, were able to assist in rescuing the injured volunteers from the water.
Two people on that boat were aircared to University of Louisville Hospital.
Madison firefighter Chris Cutshall, 31, of Madison, was in critical condition. Angela Greenwell, 34, Louisville, Ky., was in serious but stable condition
The third person on the rescue boat, Micahel Brand, 46, of Middletown, Oh., was treated for facial lacerations at Kings Daughters Hospital in Madison.
Perkins, 26, of North Road, Wash., was not hurt.
The crash is still under investigation by conservation officers.
