Press release from the Ohio County Community Foundation
(Rising Sun, Ind.) - The Ohio County Community Foundation recently awarded a total of $47,904.57 in Community Grants during the first grant cycle of 2011. The grants were awarded to local, non-profit organizations whose projects and programs benefit Ohio County. Each applicant could request up to $3,000. The Foundation staff and Board of Directors hosted an award reception on Thursday, June 16, 2011, in the Foundation office located at 591 Smart Drive. Representatives from non-profits receiving a grant were present to accept the grant award payment.
The grants for Grant Cycle I were funded from distributions of the unrestricted endowment funds of the Ohio County Today & Tomorrow Endowment Fund, and a fund created by an anonymous donor. The Ohio County Today & Tomorrow Endowment Fund was established by the City of Rising Sun and Ohio County. Both funds were established to provide charitable grants to meet the pressing needs in Ohio County.
The following non-profit organizations were awarded a Community Grant:
The Voices of Indiana Limited was awarded $1,250 to provide scholarships for Ohio County youth to participate in the Young Voices singing program to study voice.
The City of Rising Sun Mayor’s Office was awarded $3,000 toward the 2011 America in Bloom City Beautification Project.
The Rising Sun Church of Christ Christian Outreach Food Pantry was awarded $3,000 to purchase toiletry items, food and supplies for Thanksgiving Dinners to assist needy families in Ohio County.
The City of Rising Sun Clerk’s Office was awarded $500 to purchase a scanner/printer/fax machine for use in the lower level of City Hall.
The Denver Siekman Environmental Park was awarded $3,000 toward the 2011 Job Skills Training Program for youth between the ages of 12-15.
The American Legion Post #59 Auxiliary was awarded $1,500 to purchase a Digital Frame to display photos of past and present Veterans and events sponsored by the Legion.
The Rising Sun Church of Christ Childcare Ministry was awarded $2,500 to replace worn kitchen utensils and to resurface the playground to eliminate dust and dirt.
The Rising Sun Police Department was awarded $3,000 to up fit a new department vehicle with emergency equipment.
The Learning Tree of Ohio County was awarded $3, 000 to provide school supplies, haircuts, and eye exams for needy Ohio County children in the fall of 2011.
The Rising Sun Ohio County Parks Board was awarded $3,000 to purchase a security camera for the Shiner Community Park.
The Ohio County Corner was awarded $1,580 to purchase a Companion E-Pad and protective carrying case used to enter vital information pertaining to the death of a resident directly into a web-based record keeping site.
The Rising Sun Ohio County School Corporation was awarded $3,000 to upgrade reading materials in the Ohio County Elementary-Middle School Library.
The Rising Sun Church of Christ M & M’s Ministry was awarded $3,000 to purchase additional medical equipment to loan to Ohio County residents recuperating at home from a recent illness, injury or surgery.
The Ohio County Sheriff’s Department was awarded $1,878.91 to purchase lapel cameras for officers and sound proof materials for the interview room to soften echoes during the recording of an interview.
The Rising Sun Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $2,800 to purchase two 800 MHz Radios to provide improved countywide communication with local police, emergency agencies, dispatchers and ambulances.
The Soccer Association for Youth, USA, was awarded $2,808.16 to purchase goals, soccer balls and coaching bags for the SAY Soccer 4 & 5 year old division.
The Ohio County 911 Communications was awarded $2,587.50 to purchase 22 rechargeable batteries and a multi-unit charger to charge and change out radio batteries for the Police, Sheriff, Fire and Rescue Departments.
The Rising Sun Church of Christ Exercise Ministry was awarded $3,000 to purchase an Elliptical trainer and rubber flooring for the Community Work Out Room located in the church’s Family Life Center.
The Special Olympics Indiana, Ripley, Dearborn and Ohio Counties was awarded $500 toward 2011 Bowling Training and Competition Fees for Ohio County participants.
The Rising Sun-Ohio County Port Authority was awarded $3,000 as matching funds to purchase two non-coin operated viewing telescopes for the riverfront park.
The mission of the Ohio County Community Foundation (OCCF) is to build, manage and distribute a lasting source of charitable funds for Ohio County. OCCF fulfills this mission by assisting donors to establish endowments that provide charitable funds for Ohio County. Only the interests from the funds are distributed in the form of grants. This allows the funds to grow indefinitely to increase the capacity for the funds to further impact the community through future grant distributions. Grants are awarded to non-profit organizations whose programs and projects benefit the residents ofOhioCounty, in the areas of Community Development, Education, Scholarships, Health, Human Services and Cultural Affairs.
