River during the 2010 River Sweep.
(Aurora, Ind.) – A wet spring led to a higher Ohio River, which in turn swept more trash and debris to the riverbanks.
That’s why organizers of the annual Ohio River Sweep say they’ll need more and more volunteers for the cleanup effort scheduled for Saturday, June 18.
Orchestrated by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO), the River Sweep helps keep the banks clean from where the river begins in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to where it empties into the Mississippi River in Cairo, Illinois.
Last year, the River Sweep netted more than 7,000 tons of trash along the river and its tributaries.
Volunteers are rewarded with a free T-shirt. Trash bags and gloves are provided at each meeting point.
