(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - An end may be near in the tragic case of a boy killed in an accident on North Dearborn Road in Bright.
Last September 7, three-year-old Jack Carpenter had wandered into the road when he was hit by a pickup truck driven by Christy Shackelford-Grammer, of Sunman.
Shackelford-Grammer did not stop and made her way home. She contacted police the next day after reading news reports and realizing she may have been responsible for the deadly accident.
The mother of three would tell investigators she did not realize she had hit anything as she may have been distracted by the children in the truck with her at the time.
Prosecutors initially charged her with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death. An additional charge of Reckless Homicide was filed in January.
On Monday, Shackelford-Grammer’s defense and prosecutors reached a negotiated plea deal, resulting in a plea to a lesser charge in Dearborn Superior Court I.
Sentencing has been scheduled for June 3.
The case was to go to jury trial on May 23.
