(Indianapolis, Ind.) - The debate over illegal immigration came straight to the front door of Indiana’s governor Monday.
The crowd estimated between 100 and 70 demonstrators with groups Latino Youth Collective and DREAM IU participated in an unannounced rally outside the governor’s office at the Statehouse.
Five protesters would be arrested, some of whom claimed to be undocumented and risking deportation. A handful of the protesters made their way into the governor's office and were charged with Criminal Trespass
The group was urging Governor Mitch Daniels to veto Senate Bill 590 and House Bill 1402. Daniels has not said if he will sign either piece of legislation.
SB 590 – similar to a controversial immigration law in Arizona - would allow local police to enforce some immigration laws.
HB 1402 prevents undocumented students from receiving in-state tuition rates to Indiana colleges and universities.
