(Bright, Ind.) - Bright, Indiana is taking a page out of the book from Rabbit Hash, Kentucky.
The Bright Masonic Lodge #763 is holding a fundraiser which could name any Bright resident’s pet the first ever Honorary Mayor of Bright.
Applications for candidates are being taken at Bright-area businesses through May 3. There is a $5 application fee.
Guy Kaeser, chairman of the Mayor of Bright Committee, says candidates can be any type of pet - a dog, cat, horse, snake, donkey, you name it.
“This idea came from the Masonic Lodge members. We got to talking about it a couple years ago and everybody laughed, so why not,” Kaeser said.
The voting begins on Election Day, Tuesday, May 3 and will continue until June 30. That’s when the top three cash-getters will be selected for the final race to be held during the Bright Community Festival.
Constituents will be able to vote as many times as they like at the participating businesses, for a price. Each vote costs $1. The Masonic Lodge will split the proceeds with the Bright Volunteer Fire Department.
The top dog will be named the mayor, while the second and third place finishers will become Vice Mayor and Secretary of “Steak,” respectively.
Kaeser said the Bright Masonic Lodge hopes to make the election an annual event each year, but not in dog years.
