(Harrison, Oh.) - A Harrison man is sentenced to seven years in prison for brutally beating his girlfriend’s eight-month-old son.
Rick Sweeney, 26, was given the sentence in a Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Wednesday the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
During the sentencing, Sweeney seemed mainly concerned about a surgery he needs and when his prison term would begin. He asked for the case to be continued.
The judge – detailing how the baby suffered broken bones, a fractured spine, and bleeding in the brain – chastised Sweeney and showed no sympathy, ordering the prison sentence to begin immediately.
Sweeney had reached a plea deal with prosecutors last month, agreeing to plead guilty to child endangering. A charge of felonious assault was dropped in exchange.
Two years of the prison sentence are related to the endangering charge. The other five years come from convictions for theft and other drug-related crimes according to the newspaper.
