(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Republican lawmakers are working on last-minute changes to a bill that would give Governor Mitch Daniels the ability to turn highways into toll roads.
The toll road bill was supposed to go through the amendment process on the House floor Tuesday afternoon, but undisclosed changes are now being made by Republicans.
Many Democrats have voiced concern the bill gives the governor too much power.
"Not only does it give the executive branch unlimited power, but it also gives (the Indiana Department of Transportat) and the Indiana Finance Authority decision-making power to determine what is a toll road and what is not," Rep. Terri Austin (D-Anderson) told WRTV-TV in Indianapolis. "I guarantee you this is not going to be a popular thing with Hoosiers."
The changes are reportedly going to be inserted to the bill Wednesday.
