Education Center of Rising Sun
(Rising Sun, Ind.) - A new partnership between Vincennes University and the Education Center of Rising Sun will bring associate degree programs in Culinary Arts and Hotel-Motel Management to Rising Sun and Southeast Indiana. Classes will begin August 2011 at the Education Center of Rising Sun.
To celebrate the new partnership, the public is invited to an open house at the Education Center of Rising Sun on April 28, 4:30-7:00 p.m. EDT. VU representatives will be on hand to answer questions regarding the classes, financial aid, and registration. A short program will begin at 6:00 p.m. The center is located at 591 Smart Drive in Rising Sun.
The partnership evolved through a three year process of networking with regional businesses to develop a career path in the hospitality sector. Rising Sun Mayor Bill Marksberry stated, “This is an exciting time and has been a dream of mine for some time - to see post-secondary educational opportunities in Rising Sun.”
The Education Center of Rising Sun currently offers a pilot program called “START” (Skills, Tasks and Results Training) which introduces students to twelve careers within the hotel industry. After completing 15 weeks of classes and passing a final “START” examination, students become certified by the American Hotel & Lodging Institute. The program also helps prepare students for smooth transition to higher-level hospitality coursework, such as the VU classes. Sandra Bowlus serves as the instructor for the START course and will also be adjunct faculty for VU. She is a veteran teacher with 38 years of teaching experience.
By successfully completing 75 hours of instruction through the START course, the new partnership with VU will allow students to be eligible to receive VU credits which may be applied toward either associate degree program.
"This has been a joint effort and made possible by the City of Rising Sun, EcO 15 , Ohio County Community Foundation, Vincennes University and more recently the Rising Sun Regional Foundation," stated Debbie Thomason, director of the Education Center of Rising Sun.
The open house will also include refreshments provided by the "START" class and demonstrations by the Lego Robotics Team.
