Ai Odashima Brown with her daughters Kacy
(Versailles, Ind.) - The semi driver in a crash that resulted in the deaths of two little girls is not likely to face charges.
Kacy Brown, 7, and her sister Grace, 6, died in that crash on U.S. 421 last March 24. Their parents, Kristopher and Ai Odashima Brown, continue to recover from their injuries.
Indiana State Police tell WLWT-TV that they anticipate nothing more than a traffic violation against Steve Heightchew, of New Castle, Kentucky. He was at the wheel of the trailerless semi tractor when it plowed into the rear of the Brown’s truck as it was stopped waiting to make a left turn.
Investigators are still waiting toxicology tests, but say there is no indication Heightchew was inhibited at the time of the crash – he had just taken his eyes off the road.
Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertle will have the final say on whether charges are filed.
A fundraiser to help the Brown family pay medical and funeral expenses is scheduled for Saturday at the Holton Community Center.
