(Highland Heights, Ky.) - The tri-state could have a new NCAA Division 1 athletics university in coming years.
President of Northern Kentucky University James Votruba announced at Wednesday’s spring convocation that he will suggest to the school’s board of regents that NKU apply for Division 1 status this fall.
The NCAA has had a moratorium going on four years on adding new D1 schools, but that stop is set to be lifted in the fall.
NKU currently brags 13 intercollegiate sports, but must have 14 in order to become D1. The process to become D1 typically takes about four years.
Likely conference suitors for the Norse include the Horizon League or Ohio Valley Conference.
