(Decatur County, Ind.) - Indiana State Police say dental records were used to identify the victim of a horrific crash on County Road 550 W in Decatur County Wednesday night.
Troopers said a Pontiac passenger car was driving north when it veered off the road. The driver overcrrected causing the vehicle to slide into a ditch where it bottomed out. It did not strike anything.
The vehicle remained stuck int he ditch. As passersby came upon the scene they saw the vehicle headlights were on and didn't think much about it. After some time, the vehicle caught fire.
Witnesses then noticed the driver still in the vehicle. The fire became too intense too quickly and they could not pull the person to safety.
Once the fire had been put out, police could not immediately identify the deceased driver. An autopsy was performed in Indianapolis Thursday where dental records proved the victim was Dennis L. Crowe, 49, of Greensburg.
The cause of death was smoke inhalation and burns.
The crash remains under investigation by the Indiana State Police.
