Press release from South Dearborn Dollars For Scholars
(Aurora, Ind.) - South Dearborn Dollars for Scholars was recently awarded the 2011 Indiana Dollars for Scholars Best Chapter Award. This local chapter of a national organization, Scholarship America, was founded in 1991 and since then has awarded over $374,000 to 567 South Dearborn students pursuing a post-secondary education. Indiana has 109 DFS chapters and nationally, there are over 1200 chapters.
According to Indiana Dollars for Scholars Executive Director, Don Setterlof, South Dearborn Dollars for Scholars displays creativity in their fundraising efforts such as the “Bucket List” and “Score for Scholars” and leads in the state with innovative ideas such as the “Squire Challenge” and the “College Makes Cents” program.
Not only do they award scholarships to graduating seniors for their first year of college, they are working with South Dearborn Middle School to help 7th & 8th graders to start thinking about college with the Scholarshop program and a scholarship incentive program “The Squire Challenge” which awarded $4,050 in scholarships to the Class of 2014 upon their 8th grade graduation.
For the last three years, the chapter has also been awarding scholarships to current college students for their sophomore, junior & senior year of college thanks to grants from American Electric Power (AEP), the City of Aurora and the Dearborn Community Foundation.
“This forward thinking chapter is an inspiration to chapters throughout the state and, certainly, to the community it serves. I am pleased to present the Best Indiana Chapter Award to South Dearborn Dollars for Scholars.”
