(Metamora, Ind.) - The shooting of a four-year-old boy in Franklin County was a horrible accident.
That’s what Franklin County Sheriff Ken Murphy says.
The son of Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Greg Mehlbauer, four-year-old Aiden Mehlbauer was shot in the stomach inside his home Wednesday afternoon. He later died at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
The boy’s two young siblings and mother were home at the time. His father had left for his shift with the department just minutes earlier.
Details such as who fired the handgun or who the gun belonged to are not being released yet by the Indiana State Police who are leading the investigation because the case involves the family of a sheriff’s deputy. Sgt. Noel Houze has said more information could be given later Thursday.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by nearby agencies. Grief counseling is being offered to staff members.
Funeral arrangements could be announced soon.
