(St. Leon, Ind.) – The owners of a dog may want to rename him “Lucky” after the pet survived a plunge into icy waters Tuesday.
St. Leon firefighters and Dearborn County Water Rescue were called to a pond on Cedar Creek Drive just off of State Road 46 in Sunman after a person witnessed a dog fall through the melting ice around 5:00 p.m.
Bill Black, director of Dearborn County Water Rescue, said firefighters were able to pull the dog out of the pond. It has since survived.
“We go out because we don’t want people going in after their pets when they fall through ice,” said Black.
Many ponds, lakes, and creeks around the tri-state appear to remain frozen, but recent warm temperatures have caused the ice to weaken. The high temperature will reach into the mid-50’s Wednesday and increase into the 60’s on Thursday and Friday.
Black advises people stay off the ice no matter how thick it is.
