(Greendale, Ind.) - Local businesses are being warned about a new scam where the person behind it asks for large amounts of food.
Greendale Police say they took a report from Kennett’s Marathon Wednesday when the gas station, convenience store, and restaurant nearly fell victim.
A person identifying himself as “William Stanley” had called wanting to order 150 chef salads.
“He tried to give them a credit card number with the catch that they had to send him $950 Western Union as soon as the order was processed. Kinnett’s realized this was a scam and phoned the police,” said Greendale Police Sgt. Kevin Turner.
“When a person makes an offer of employment or purchase with the stipulation that you have to send them money, then red flags should go up that this is a scam,” he added.
Reports of offers to be “secret shoppers” where the recipient has to cash a check and send the employer money via Western Union or any other wire transfer is always a scam.
