(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Snow is covering Eagle Country today, making for very messy roads.

We could have up to six inches on the ground by the time the snow lets up overnight according to the National Weather Service. The tri-state is under a Winter Storm Warning until 5:00 a.m. Friday.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says most of its trucks at the Aurora Subdistrict garage are out trying to clear the state roads. About 580 yellow plow trucks have been deployed statewide.

That has not prevented countless accidents and slideoffs around southeast Indiana.  At least one person was injured in a weather-related crash on Interstate 74 at the 145 mile marker, about four miles west of Batesville.

“All roads in the 10 county Versailles District are becoming snow covered, slick and hazardous.  Motorists should adjust their speeds accordingly and be cautious when driving on what appears to be only a “wet” surface.  Bridges and overpasses have a tendency to freeze and may only look wet.  Motorists should also increase their following distances behind other traffic as following too closely is a major crash causation factor in inclement right behind unsafe speed,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Noel Houze.

Temperatures will dip to about 10 degrees overnight and INDOT says that will limit the effectiveness of salt on the icy pavement. Stiff winds will cause snow to drift onto roads as well, particularly those running north to south.

“Although the slick and hazardous driving conditions can contribute to crashes, driver actions and error are the primary cause of most crashes in inclement weather,” said Houze.

Road conditions reported by INDOT crews and National Weather Service alerts are available online at TrafficWise.IN.gov or by dialing 800-261-ROAD (7623).

Residents in the City of Greendale are asked to park their vehicles off the street if possible so that city plows can more easily clear the snow.

In Kentucky, a Level 1 Snow Emergency has been issued in Boone County.
