(Vevay, Ind.) - The search on the Ohio River for a missing hunter is going from rescue to recovery.
Three friends from Worthville, Ky. were hunting water fowl in a john boat on the river east of Vevay when the boat was hit by a wave, filled with water, and sank Monday morning say Indiana Conservation Officers.
Two of the men - Joseph McDermott, 21, and Jeremy Pence, 20 - swam to shore after grabbing lifejackets.
However, Justin Hearn, 20, was not wearing a lifejacket and did not make it to the river bank.
Meanwhile, McDermott and Pence went to a nearby residence for help. They were each taken to Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Kentucky to be treated for hypothermia. Both have since been released.
Crews from several agencies in Indiana and Kentucky were using divers and sonar to find Hearn. A Hamilton County Sheriff's helicopter searched the shoreline for sings he had made it to shore.
The search was called off before dark set in Monday night. They’ll resume the effort Tuesday morning.
Agencies responding to the incident were Switzerland County EMS, Indiana Conservation Officers, Switzerland County Sheriff’s Department, Patriot VFD, Posey Twp. VFD, East Enterprise VFD, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, Dearborn County Water Rescue, Worthville VFD (Kentucky) and Hamilton County (Ohio) Sheriff’s Department helicopter.
