The Freedom From Religion Foundation has sent a letter to Franklin County Commissioners and members of the Brookville Town Council asking that nativity display on the lawn at the Franklin County Courthouse be taken down.

The foundation is arguing the religious display violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

“We ask that the nativity scene be removed from the courthouse lawn and moved to private property where it will be more appropriately displayed,” wrote FFRF staff attorney Rebecca Markert in the letter, adding that the foundation wants to be informed in writing what steps are being taken to remedy the violation of the First Amendment.

Currently, the display still stands as the county attorney reviews the case.

The Madison, Wisc.-based FFRF claims on their website to have 16,000 member atheists and agnostics across the country. Approximately 200 of their members are in Indiana.
