Tigers, Wildcats Will Battle At Lucas Oil Stadium - June 18, 2013 8:12:00 am

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – Lawrenceburg and Franklin County high school football teams will clash this coming season on the biggest gridiron stage in Indiana: Lucas Oil Stadium.

Lawrenceburg Tigers head coach Ryan Knigga said his team has accepted an invitation to play in Big Rivals Night at the home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. Lawrenceburg will play EIAC rival Franklin County on Saturday, September 21 at approximately 2:00 p.m.

The meeting will be part of an afternoon and evening of Big Rivals Night games at Lucas Oil Stadium. Knigga said his team and Franklin County will play prior to games featuring Ben Davis vs. Pike and Jasper vs. Vincennes Lincoln.

It should be a thrill for the teams to play on the same field which hosted a Super Bowl just last year.

Knigga said he believes that Lucas Oil Stadium appearance will be Lawrenceburg’s first trip to play at the Colts’ home field since the Tigers participated in the EIAC Day at the RCA Dome in 1999. A former Tigers player himself, Knigga recalled playing against Franklin County in the 1994 EIAC Day at the Dome.

The coach said he and Lawrenceburg High School athletic director Joe Vogelgesang will attend an organizational meeting for the Lucas Oil Stadium game Tuesday morning. More details about the high school football showcase event could be available then.

Lawrenceburg was originally scheduled to host the game against Franklin County at Dick Meador Stadium on Friday, September 20.

East Central and Batesville faced off at Lucas Oil Stadium in 2011. Milan played Indian Creek there in 2010.

Father, Son Take Field With Freedom on Fathers Day - June 13, 2013 9:43:05 am

(Florence, Ky.) – This Sunday, the Florence Freedom will be celebrating Father’s Day at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium. Kids will enjoy spending the day with dad on the field playing catch, laughing at dads competing in the “Daddy Water Balloon toss” and watching the Freedom take on the Frontier Greys.

But one dad and son might just have a little more fun than the rest in attendance this Sunday; that’s because they’ll be spending the day as Freedom players.

Fourteen-year-old Noah Kitchen participated in the Freedom’s “Be A Freedom Player With Dad” contest and submitted his essay at the Florence Qdoba Mexican Grill location.

On Monday, the Freedom and Qdoba picked the winning essay, with Noah’s standing out among the rest. One of the biggest reasons; Noah says, “If you pick him, he would probably do a cartwheel on the field because of how happy it would make him.”

Noah and his father will spend the day taking batting practice in their personalized Freedom gear, be added to the roster for a day, take the field with the Freedom during lineups, and spend the game together in the dugout.

What do they look forward to most?

“Sitting in the dugout and meeting all the players is something I’m really looking forward to,” said Noah.

“One of the things our family likes to do most is take trips and do new things together, so I’m just looking forward to the whole experience,” the surprised father Derek said. Noah and his family submitted the essays without their father’s knowledge.

All kids and their dads with an on-field wristband will be allowed to participate in a pre-game round of catch. To get a wristband for the kids and dad, one of the following criteria must be met:

Season ticket holder
Purchase the “Father’s Day Special” (see FlorenceFreedom.com)
or
Purchase an individual wristband near the third base gate entrance for $2 each

Pre-game catch will be from 5:05 – 5:35pm. The gates open for Sunday’s Great Country 94.1 Family Sunday presented by The Bank of Kentucky at 5:05pm, with game time at 6:05pm. Kids will get to run the bases with an entire team autograph session post-game.

The Freedom play all home games at UCMC Stadium located at 7950 Freedom Way in Florence, Kentucky. The Freedom may be contact at 859-594-HITS (4487). The Freedom are members of the professional independent Frontier League.

IHSAA 3A Regional at Jasper – Semi-Final

Gibson Southern 10, Franklin County 1 – Franklin County’s season ends with a 22-4 record and an EIAC conference championship.

IHSAA 2A Regional at Southridge – Semi-Final

South Spencer 12, Switzerland County 2 – Switzerland County’s Cinderella run ended in the regional. The Pacers finish the year at 8-16 and as sectional champions.

IHSAA 1A Regional at Morristown – Semi-Final

Rising Sun 6, University 2 - Rising Sun defeated University in the regional semi-final early game to earn the right to play for the regional title Monday evening. Starting pitcher Miles Morris threw a complete game, striking out 10 batters, walking 6, and allowing 5 hits with 2 earned runs.

IHSAA 1A Regional at Morristown – Final

Rising Sun 4, Indianapolis Lutheran 1 – Rising Sun advanced to the 1A semi-state (final four) with the win. They will play Vincennes Rivet (18-12) in the semi-state game Saturday, June 8 at either Plainfield or Jasper. The Shiners are now 23-3 on the season.

IHSAA 3A Semi-State at Jasper – Semi-State Semi Final

Tri-West Hendricks 6, South Dearborn 4 – Ellen Barrett and Makayla McClurg each slugged two-run home runs, but it wasn’t enough to stop Tri-West.

IHSAA 1A Semi-State at North Daviess – Semi-Final

Tecumseh 5, Rising Sun 4 – 9 innings – Rising Sun scored two runs in the top of the 9^th, but Tecumseh came back with three runs in the bottom of the extra frame to advance. Bailee Bostic and Tiffany Vinup each had a hit and an RBI. Alex DeDreu pitched 8.2 innings with 8 Ks and only 2 walks. The Lady Shiners’ season ends with a great 24-7 record, ORVC champions, and IHSAA Sectional and Regional champions.

BOYS GOLF

IHSAA Sectional 27 at Greensburg Country Club

Columbus North won the sectional team title with a score of 288. Columbus East was second (320) and North Decatur third (325) to also earn trips to the IHSAA Regional round. Columbus North’s Michael Vandeventer and Nick Waskom were co-medalists each shooting a 69. Individuals advancing by their own performance were Greensburg’s Keegan McCullough (74), Milan’s Travis Butte (76), and South Decatur’s Dustin Huff (76).

IHSAA Sectional 28 at Madison’s Sunrise Golf Course

Madison won the team tournament sectional title with a 293 over 18 holes, followed by second place Jennings County’s 318 and third place Scottsburg’s 331. All three teams advance to Regionals on Thursday, June 6 at Providence. Madison’s Jordan Griffith was medalist of the sectional with an impressive 67. Golf players advancing to Regionals because of their individual performances were Rising Sun’s Bryce and Brady Murray by both shooting a 76 and Switzerland County’s Clint Swanson with an 81. Rising Sun was 4^th in the team standings with a team score of 335, but do not advance as a team.

Wheat 3rd In Shot Put; Other Locals At IHSAA Track Finals - June 3, 2013 10:54:39 am

(Bloomington, Ind.) – South Dearborn’s Makenzie Wheat claimed third place in the girls shot put at the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Track & Field Finals in Bloomington Saturday.

The Knights senior hurled her shot 43’5.5” to earn the bronze, just behind the first place finish of Martinsville’s Liz Iversen at 46’10.5”. North Central’s Briana Radford was second at 44’7.75”.

Wheat also qualified for state in the girls’ discus throw. She placed 17^th with a distance of 123’4”. Adriana Brown of Lawrence Central sent her throw an impressive 168’6” to earn first, with second place an entire 24 feet behind her.

Wheat’s South Dearborn teammate, sophomore Ariel Biggs as 13^th in the girls high jump at 5’3”. Batesville’s Kimberly Tidman was tied 12^th at 5’4”.

In the boys finals held Friday in Bloomington, Rising Sun’s Austin Martin placed 8^th in the high jump at 6’4”.

East Central Trojan junior Cade Knueven was 21^st in the 200 meter dash preliminaries at 23.15 seconds. He was 27^th in the prelims of the 100 meter dash at 11.51.

Other local state final performers included the following girls:

100 Meter Dash - Virginia Westerfeld, Batesville, 23^rd in preliminary race at 12.76 seconds.

200 Meter Dash - Hannah Patton, East Central, 26^th in preliminaries at 26.9 seconds.

400 Meter Dash - Rylee Goldsmith, Batesville, 22^nd in final at 1:00.75.

800 Meter Run - Meredith Maier, Oldenburg Academy, 19^th at 2:19.64.

4x100 Meter Relay - East Central 23^rd at 50.62. Kelli Cartuyvelles, Kendall Gindling, Hannah Patton, and Olivia Fette.

Rising Sun versus University will begin at 10:00 a.m. Game 2 featuring Shakamak versus Indianapolis Lutheran will start at 12:30 p.m. The winners will play in the Regional championship at 6:00 p.m.

BOYS GOLF

Southwestern Boys golf team won their four-way match against Shawe Memorial, Switzerland County, and South Ripley. The Rebels shot a 167, Shawe Memorial was second with a 181, Switzerland Count was third with a 184, and South Ripley shot a 205. Shawe's Joey Mingione won medalist honors firing a 2 over par 38. Stacey Noble with a 39 for Southwestern, Clint Swanson lead the way for Switzerland County with a 40, and South Ripley's Shawn Ryle shot a 47.

(Versailles, Ind.) – Coaches in four sports have selected winners of the Ohio River Valley Conference postseason awards.

Rising Sun 11, Edinburgh 0 – 5 innings – The Shiners’ Alix Dedreu tossed a complete game three hitter. Teammate Tiffany Vinup went 3-3 with a home run and a double to amass 4 RBIs. Rising Sun improves to 24-6 on the year. The Lady Shiners advance to the semi-states where they will meet Tecumseh (19-7) on Saturday, June 1 at North Daviess.

Switzerland County 10, Austin 7 – Austin scored 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 4-0 but Switzerland County responded with 7 runs in the top of the fifth to lead for good and come away with the win. Austin had 8 hits and committed a very untypical 7 errors. Switzerland County had 10 hits and only 1 error on the day. Switz claims its first baseball sectional title since 1981.
