Volunteers with Hands and Feet Ministry in Marysville, Indiana following tornado destruction in March 2012.

provided

(Bright, Ind.) - A non-profit organization based in Bright is planning to go to Oklahoma and help with the cleanup effort after Monday’s destructive tornado.

Hands and Feet Ministry President Jacob Mansfield says he will be among 11 individuals from Dearborn County leaving for Moore, Oklahoma next Tuesday, May 28. They will remain there until May 31 helping clear debris and providing basic supplies.

“Last year we went to Marysville (which was struck by a tornado) and helped with the cleanup. This is part of a bigger goal for Hands and Feet to have a disaster relief team to send out anytime something like this happens,” Mansfield said.

The group is requesting donations of supplies to help in their mission. Items can be dropped off at The Gathering Place Coffee House located at 1932 Jamison Road in Bright.

Requested supplies include work gloves, vinyl gloves, shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, cooling cloths, hats, safety glasses, masks, heavy duty trash bags, tarps, rope, paper towels, toilet paper, basic first aid kits, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, lip balm, cleaning wipes, plastic storage containers, and shelter tents for shade.

The organization also needs help in getting to Oklahoma. Monetary donations for transportation costs can be given through the Hands and Feet Ministry website at www.HFMinistry.org and clicking the “Donate Now” button. Gas cards can be dropped off at The Gathering Place.

Mansfield says he is hopeful that a local store can donate non-perishable foods. He noticed in Maryville that FEMA and the Red Cross provided plenty of water and other essentials, but people still desired canned goods.

Hands and Feet Ministry was founded in 2011 by Mansfield. He says the organization does a lot of good in Dearborn County by frequently participating in community projects on the weekend. Mansfield can be contacted by phone at (513) 340-1793, through the website www.HFMinistry.org, or the Hands and Feet Ministry Facebook page.

Mansfield noted that The Gathering Place Coffee House is not currently open for business, but plans to welcome the public sometime this summer.

Freedom Hope Fans Line Up For Te'o Gag Gift - May 23, 2013 7:57:45 am

(Florence, Ky.) - The Florence Freedom minor league baseball team made national headlines earlier this year when they announced a peculiar bobblehead giveaway.

At Thursday night’s game at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium, the team will give away Manti Te’o girlfriend bobbleheads to the first 1,000 fans through the gate.

The story of the former Notre Dame linebacker’s nonexistent girlfriend inspired the organization’s idea. The joke: the bobblehead box will be empty.

"This will be the best kind of bobblehead a fan could get," Freedom General Manager Josh Anderson said when the attention-grabbing promotion was announced in January. "Because now fans can make the bobblehead out to be whatever they want it to be."

Taking the gag a little further, the team has also reserved a section of seating down the left field line for fans with imaginary friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, or spouses. Additionally, there will be an air guitar contest, a pretend kiss cam, and an imaginary food fight.

Gates open at 5:35 p.m. with first pitch against the visiting Schaumburg Bombers slated for 6:35.

Thursday night Freedom home games are $1 beer night. Tonight’s game will feature a postgame concert by Folsom.

Legion Bringing Back Memorial Day Parade May 27 - May 23, 2013 7:39:00 am

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - The Lawrenceburg American Legion Post 239 wants the community to remember that Memorial Day is not about barbecues and swimming pools. It’s about those who gave their lives defending the country.

After not having it last year due to lack of interest in prior years, the legion is bringing back its Memorial Day Parade this coming Monday, May 27. Legion member Mick McNimery said the parade will be a scaled down from what it once was.

“We need to get the people out to line the streets. It’s not who or what is in the parade. It’s why we have the parade,” McNimery said.

The parade will start at 10:00 a.m. Monday, with a shorter route only proceeding down Walnut Street in Lawrenceburg. In 2011, only about 20 people come out to wave to the veterans riding in the parade, McNimery recalled.

“It also shows support for the troops that are out there today. These young men and woman are in some cases on their fourth or fifth deployments. Their families sacrifice a lot. In a way, the parade shows support for them, too,” said McNimery.

If this year’s parade is considered a success, then the legion could expand it in 2014.

The public is also invited to a post-parade Memorial Day Service at the veterans area of the Greendale Cemetery. Dearborn Circuit Court Judge James D. Humphrey will deliver a speech and Buddy Foster will read the poem “Freedom Isn’t Free.”

(Aurora, Ind.) - A man was hospitalized following a house fire early Thursday morning in Aurora.

The blaze was reported at about 3:15 a.m. at a home at 5757 Lower Dillsboro Road. Firefighters were able to limit the fire – sparked by a candle – to the bedroom it started in. Flames at one point were seen coming from the rear windows.

“Quick deployment resulting in a successful knockdown of the fire, limiting spread to the original room of origin,” said Aurora Fire Department Lt. Kevin Turner.

One person in the home, David Faulkner, 44, was taken to Dearborn County Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental, Turner said. Damage to the home is estimated at about $20,000.

The Aurora Fire Department was assisted on scene by Dillsboro Fire Department, Lawrenceburg Fire Department, Hogan Township Fire Department, Aurora Emergency Rescue, Duke Energy, and the American Red Cross.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office says George Meyerratken, 79, of Crestview Hills, drove his car into the lake near the office of the Crestview Lakes Mobile Home Park on Sharon Drive. Meyerratken was backing his Lexus SUV out of his parking space when he lost control backing over the parking stops and into the lake.

Witnesses to the accident, deputies, and a Florence Police officer all worked to free the driver from the partially submerged car.

Deputies believe Meyerratken suffered a medical issue which caused the accident. He was transported to Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Florence where his condition is unknown.

Meyerratken is the co-owner of the mobile home park.

State Leaders Call For Grant Oversight In New Article - May 22, 2013 2:37:38 pm

(Indianapolis, Ind.) – Following up on its Sunday front page expose concerning the City of Lawrenceburg 10 County Regional Grant Program, The Indianapolis Star published a new article Wednesday providing reaction from state officials.

Sunday’s article (found here) detailed five grants awarded in recent years to economic development projects that either haven’t produced close to the number of jobs promised or personally benefitted elected officials. The grants in question ranged from $5 million for Carbon Motors in Connersville to $400,000 for an unopened restaurant partly owned by the City of Greendale’s mayor and city attorney.

“We’re going to have to stay on this problem. Unless the legislature keeps their finger on it, we’re not at the end of the road on solving this,” State Senator Luke Kenley (R-Noblesville) said in the latest article.

The article written by The Star’s Mary Beth Schneider quotes Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller saying there is not enough transparency with the program. He hinted at possible audits for those who have misused the funds or don’t have receipts to show the money was spent properly to repay their grants.

State Senator Jim Banks (R-Columbia City) called the Sunday article’s revelations “startling.” He called for a better mechanism to make sure those dollars are spent in the public’s interest.

Banks said he will propose legislation to do just that. A bill that would have required government agencies receiving casino revenues – such as Lawrenceburg – to file an annual report showing how the money is used was watered down to only require a report from non-profit organizations.

“We could just hear rumors that there were grants being made without any follow-up. There were grants being made where there might be conflicts of interest, so we just decided to dig into it a little bit,” fellow State Senator Kenley (R-Noblesville) was quoted in the article.

Kenley, the Senate budget chief, said he didn’t think there have been any laws broken with the grant program, but there is a problem with the situation not being heavily governed.

Kenley said “the light of the sun” from Sunday’s report will help lawmakers realize that something needs to be done.

State Senator Mike Delph (R-Carmel) authored a law in the completed 2013 legislative session that requires more disclosure of state incentives the Indiana Economic Development Commission uses to lure businesses to the state.
